Markus Hodel studied history at the University of Fribourg. He earned a PhD in contemporary history and went on to complete a management training in the International Executive Programme (IEP) at INSEAD in Fontainebleau near Paris. He gained several years of professional experience in Fribourg and Bern. From 1996 to 2002 he was head of the higher education institution group within the Education Department of the canton of Lucerne. He was then rector of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts from 2003-2008.
From 2004 to 2007, Markus Hodel was chairman of the Rectors’ Conference of the Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences (KFH). After that, he was state chancellor for the Canton of Lucerne from 2008 to 2011. From 2012 to 2022, he was again rector of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, as well as chairman of the university executive board. During his rectorate, he was a member of the Foundation Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation and various swissuniversities delegations, as well as President of the Swiss Higher Education Management Association and the Bürgenstock Conference.
